AIR FLOW METER

These go bad a lot and seem to be related to carbon/sludge in the intake system(see also intake manifolds, EGR Valves). Some people say that running the right oil in your TDI can help reduce the amount of crud that makes it to the intake. We have not seen empirical proof of this, but it can't hurt! If yours goes bad, you will probably have a loss of power, along with the dreaded Check Engine Light

RELAYS

Are nothing more than heavy-duty switches. If your glow plugs are not getting power and the fuse is good, it's probably your glow plug relay. If you're just driving along and the car craps out like somebody just turned it off, it's probably the power supply relay(the 109 relay). Both go bad more than you would think.

This is a dual sensor- it sends a signal to the ECU, and another signal to the guage, either half of the sensor can fail without affecting the other.

NOTE: There are many sensors in the TDI models and many poor running conditions can be caused by a faulty sensor. However, like all electrical parts, sensors are not returnable, so make sure you diagnose the problem correctly before you order.

INTAKE MANIFOLD

Most TDI owners are aware(or soon will be) that TDI's are known to have a problem with the intake manifold and EGR valve clogging up with sludge/carbon. Some customers have reported that the intake ports on their manifolds have gotten blocked up to the point where airflow is restricted to a passage about the diameter of a pencil. This doesn't help the engine run better! If your TDI doesn't have the power it used to, check your manifold. We have new manifolds and EGR Valves available.br />

The TDI is the first Volkswagen Diesel to use electronics to control the injection timing and quantity - there is no accelerator cable or cold start cable. The computer handles everything! If yours goes bad, the engine probably won't run at all, or very poorly at best. To ensure we get you the correct computer, get the part number off yours before you call. Engine Speed Sensor(628)

This does exactly what the name implies-tells the computer the speed of the engine. This is important for the engine to run properly. Also called the Crank Position Sensor.

EGR VALVE

This also tends to get blocked with crud. The assembly includes the EGR Valve and the anti-shudder valve which closes off the intake air when the engine is shut off.

EGR COOLER

'The EGR cooler is a heat exchanger that cools the exhaust gases being released back into the intake manifold. Cooling the recirculated exhaust improves emissions, power and fuel economy, so if your cooler is plugged up with carbon, or leaking coolant, replace it immediately!
