Gas Tanks
Vanagon gas tanks are subject to rust out. Dirt debris, salt collects between the upper part of the tank and the body, rusting out the top of the tank. Vanagon tanks at the dealer cost over $577.

Manual Transmission
Transmissions are hidden under the Vanagon and out of sight...out of mind, thus they run low on fluid and burn out. Check for leaks when checking your fluid levels.
Early Vanagons have some trouble with manual transmissions. We recommend you change your gear oil now. I know you haven't done it in 5 years, and do it again every 2 years or 30,000 miles. Also don't speed shift, you can't get there that fast in a Vanagon anyway. We have good used Vanagon transmissions and factory remanufactured units with up to a 2-year limited warranty.

Automatic Transmission
Automatic transmissions have separate compartments for gear oil and trans fluid, its different stuff. Again the gear oil and ATF should be changed today and again every two years. Care should be taken before long overloaded camping trips to see fluids are clean and full.
