Generators, Alternators, Air Cooled br />
Beetles and Ghias use generators up until 1973-1/2. The '73-1/2 to '74 models used an alternator with an external voltage regulator. The voltage regulator was mounted under the rear driver's side seat against the side wall of the vehicle. 1975 thru '79 Beetles used an alternator with a built-in voltage regulator. All Type IIIs and Buses to 1971 used a generator. All Type IV and Buses '72-79 used a special alternator different than the Beetle.

Voltage Regulators
The voltage regulator turns the alternator or generator on and off and makes it charge the battery. If the battery is boiling, it is being overcharged and the voltage regulator is definitely bad. If the battery is being undercharged, it's not so easy, it could be the voltage regulator, a loose alternator belt, bad battery or a bad alternator. Further analysis is required.
