You can fix your fuel
injection - CALL!
The Vanagon uses Bosch fuel injection, it's great when it runs great but if it goes bad many people prefer to throw it away and install a simple carburetor. Parts Place sells a simple to install and work on single carburetor kit. It fits all Vanagon engines '72-83. The procedure is (1) Remove or disconnect all the FI equipment including electric fuel pump or the old carburetors (2) Buy and install the carburetor kit (CAB-WEB-297-N), (3) Install a new low pressure electric fuel pump (AC-127-200). You'll need six feet of fuel hose, a new fuel filter and a half dozen clamps. (4) Start it up and drive away. The kit is almost as good (some say better) as the brand new original system and is certainly better than a poorly working or tired original system at half the price of even minor repairs.
